Calcium Citrate?

I feel like I am still stumbling my way through vitamins/supplements and figured I would turn to the experts - my PA peeps!

When it comes to calcium/calcium citrate – how much are we supposed to take? My surgeon des not list an additional calcium other that what we get in the multi vitamin. But over the months I kept reading on the main board that we need it, and we specifically need citrate as it is what we can absorb. I keep seeing 1500-2000mg a day.

So I went out and bought a bottle and the pills were humungous. To get the right dose I had to take 2 a day, but I could not swallow them. And I’m normally fine with pills. Then I bought Citracel petites, which I can swallow but to get the same mg amount I have to take 9 a day – which is crazy!! And they’re not that petite. Twice the size of an aspirin at least.

I’m willing to buy something else – just want to avoid another dud.

Can anybody give me any advice? Is the amount I am trying to take too much? Is there a better petite or good chewable out there? Do I even need it? Should I stop whining and suck it up…..

Cherish,

There are chewable calcium citrate tablets that they sell at Barix, but they are kind of pricey. I like the Celebrate chewable calcium that they sell. It is thinner than the others and has a more pleasant (less chalky)consistency. You can also look online at Bariatric Advantage and Bariatric Eating.com. They have chocolate chews that are like CANDY! Yes, they are sugar free!!!

Hope that helps!

You should have no problem with the Centrum if you put it in your cottage cheese or pudding or yogurt.  It will go straight down, don't bite into it, it will be bitter.

I take 1 in the AM & 1 in the PM

Mine also have D & Magnesium

Some days your the dog and some days your the hydrant.

It's been a long time since I owned my gym and went to seminars but we were told the body can only assimilate about 800 mg of calcium at a time.

Cherish,

There are chewable Calcium Citrates (as someone said Barix sells them, also try Vitalady.com) and Caltrate makes petite size.  Also, be sure to take them after you have eaten for the maximum benefit.

My doctor had me up my doseage after my 2nd year, based on new information put out by the medical profession, so I take about 1800 mgs a day

Cherish,
I take the Bariatric Advantage Calcium.  You suck on them until they dissolve.  It takes about 10 minutes for each one.  They are 500 mg each.  We should have a min of 1500 calcium per day, so I take three.  I get the cherry ones but they also have them in cinnamon and chocolate.  They also have chews like the other poster said.  To me, they taste pretty good.  A little chalky like all calcium is (Tums like chalky...but wayyyy better tasting then Tums).

I take 2 Calcet dreay Bites.  They come in lemon or chocolate.  They look like tiny cubes.  I love the lemon.  I order them at BJs Bariatrics.

Thanks for the great info and suggestions.Right now I am going to stick with the Citracel petites that I have. In a month when I run out I may try the BA ones.
